------------------ From: Eric Gardner <gardner@vmail.svsu.edu> Subject: Re: History of Column Writing Date: November 3, 2009 6:03:32 PM EST There's a long and rich tradition of columnists in the Black press-- including both named columnists and folks who wrote regular letters under titles like "correspondent" but were essentially columnists, from Ida B. Wells to Jennie Carter, and, of course, several later figures moving into the twentieth century. That tradition is all too often ignored, and it remains deeply understudied. A set of contemporary web-based works that represent fascinating next steps can be found at < http://www.theroot.com/ >. Best of luck with your project. My major project (our version of a thesis) is an expanded feature looking at how column writing has evolved since the emergence of web journalism. A component of the project is a sidebar piece looking at the modern history (last ~120 years) of column writing and im still looking to beef it up a bit with some more research. If you have any pertinent books/articles to recommend, please do. Thank you for your time, David ------------------------------------------------------- jhistory@H-NET.MSU.EDU http://www.h-net.org/~jhistory -------------------------------------------------------
