VIA: APSA-CIVED@h-net.msu.edu From: Michael Brintnall [mailto:brintnall@apsanet.org] Sent: Thu 4/30/2009 4:29 PM To: APSA-CIVED@H-NET.MSU.EDU Subject: Democracy Imperative Conference Dear Colleague: It's my pleasure to forward information about an important national conference that is being organized by the The Democracy Imperative <http://www.unh.edu/democracy/> and the Deliberative Democracy Consortium <http://www.deliberative-democracy.net/> . No Better Time: Promising Opportunities in Deliberative Democracy for Educators and Practitioners, <http://www.unh.edu/democracy/conference2009/index.html> will be at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H. on July 8 - July 11, 2009. This conference offers an opportunity for academics and leading democracy-builders in the field to work together to consider future directions in the teaching, learning, and practice of democracy in communities, in government, and on campuses. The conference is being organized around 50 or so "learning exchanges <http://www.unh.edu/democracy/conference2009/learning-exchanges.html> " that have been proposed by conference participants. Some of the learning exchanges that might interest you are: * Beyond the timid university: Rethinking academic professionalism to renew the democratic potential of college campuses. * Political theory or practice? How political science and government departments help strengthen democracy. * Students as catalysts for change. * And justice for all: Just how serious are deliberative democracy practitioners and scholars about social, political, and economic justice? * Embedding deliberative practices in local democracy. The conference organizers have offered to extend the early bird registration rate ($250) to APSA members through May 13, 2009, at which point the rate increases.
