Greetings! When I was doing my own research for my dissertation in the 80s, I didn't find much written by Muslim authors, the time, and public interest, didn't seem to have evolved "yet". Try looking for books by Fatima Mernissi--she wrote some non-fiction books during that time, and even then, there were few of the non-fiction kind. Jan Goodwin wrote a non-fiction book about women called Price of Honor: Muslim Women Lift the Veil of Silence on the Islamic World, Newly updated (Paperback - Dec 31, 2002) I've seen the updated version, I read the original which was published quite a few years earlier. There are books called Stolen Lives; Behind the Veil; Women and Gender in Islam; and others. I suggest a search on Amazon.com, and also that you look at books other than Not Without My Daughter, which, although a good book, is still written by an American woman who writes about an exceptional circumstance in her life, and in my opinion, is not representative of "who" and "what" Muslim women are. There are dozens of books out there--I think that when you search some more, you'll find these sources. I suggest that you look at some ethnographic works too--and, I encourage you to be aware of the different perspectives of the authors, as Muslim, non-Muslim, American, or non-American, etc. The origin of the perspective (author) will also provide some information to you. Good Luck Joan I. Biddle Ph.D. Sociologist jbiddle2@verizon.net
