X-Posted from Medical Anthropology <H-MEDANTHRO@H-NET.MSU.EDU> From: Emily Wentzell <wentzell@UMICH.EDU> _________ From: Mark Nichter Subject: Critical Anthro of Global Health (CAGH) SIG at AAAs Greetings all, The AAA meetings in Philadelphia are fast approaching, and in order to make our limited time together at the CAGH meeting efficient and productive, we've pulled together some information and a proposed agenda for the meeting - so that some of the past news and upcoming discussion can take place in advance of the meeting. 2-089 - CRITICAL ANTHROPOLOGY OF GLOBAL HEALTH STUDY GROUP Date/Time: Fri., 12:15 PM-1:30 PM Location: Grand Ballroom Salon IV, 1st Floor Courtyard Marriott We have had a number of successes working within the SMA Takes a Stand framework, but we need to discuss the next topic to consider for the upcoming year. Previous Workgroup (Global Health): This CAGH statement (published in Dec 08 MAQ) is one of the 15 most downloaded articles on Anthrosource - demonstrating that this process helps get our ideas and work out to a larger audience, beyond medical anthropologists. This is promising, because one of our goals is to be more than change agents within our own community, but to engage a larger audience with what we have to offer as medical anthropologists. Current Workgroup (Immigration and Health): The current statement is under comment by the general SMA membership as part of the Takes A Stand process - be sure to head to the SMA site to log your comments and suggestions if you have not done so already. Sarah Willen (and Heide Casteneda) will give us an update on the process at the CAGH meeting, and they are planning to assemble during/after the CAGH meeting to focus on continuing the dialogue that has taken place so far. Also, be sure to check out their invited session at the AAAs, which (conveniently) meets just before the CAGH meeting. 2-032 - DO "ILLEGAL" MIGRANTS HAVE A RIGHT TO HEALTH? TOWARD A CRITICAL MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY OF UNAUTHORIZED MIGRATION AND HEALTH Session Date/Time: Fri., 8:00 AM-11:45 AM Location: Grand Ballroom Salon E, 5th Floor, Philadelphia Marriott Organizer(s): HEIDE CASTANEDA & SARAH WILLEN Next Workgroup: We need to decide on our next topic, but rather than spend valuable meeting time discussing possible topics (there are many), we will use the time between now and the AAAs to focus on a shortlist of potential topics, so we arrive at the meeting ready to discuss specific topics. One idea that was brought up at the last meeting (both in our meeting, and in Carolyn Sargent's address), was to take a closer look insurance and health care, which has proven to be an incredibly relevant topic, given the current situation of health care reform. Our discussion at the last meeting included the need for ethnographies focused on insurance and that include stakeholders views, political economy, health care reform debates, and how people are looking both nationally and internationally at different models of health care delivery. There were other excellent ideas, and I propose that anyone who has an idea they think the group should consider AND that they are interested in taking some degree of responsibility for, should email them to the Ben McMahan (SMA webmaster, also a member of our group) at bmcmahan@email.arizona.edu with the subject line "CAGH meeting discussion idea" ASAP. He'll compile the responses and send out a digest in advance of the meeting, and bring paper copies (of the digest). At the meeting, we'll structure our time, and have short 5 minute discussions on each topic, before deciding to move forward. Re: the meeting - the agenda includes the following Meet members with brief introductions A report from the immigration and health workgroup on their current statement (this group can serve as an exemplar of how the process can produce a specific product - i.e. the statement, as well as to encourage continued dialogue on a relevant topic) A report on the Virchow Award winners A discussion of the Web site and how it can facilitate dialogue and outreach in between our meetings. The immigration group is developing a interactive blog/network focused on their topic, and we plan to aggregate theirs and other sub-group's discussions on the CAGH (SMA) site. A discussion of all the proposed topics for the next statement (5 min each), and a decision on the next topic the CAGH group will work on for the SMA Takes A Stand process. ------ H-MedAnthro: H-Net Network on Medical Anthropology To post messages to the list, send them to: h-medanthro@h-net.msu.edu Network page: http://www.h-net.msu.edu/~medanthro/ Society for Medical Anthropology website: http://www.medanthro.net/ To manage your subscription, visit: http://www.h-net.org/lists/subscribe.cgi
