For an upper division course on the American West I am in search of readable primary source documents on Mormon polygamy. I'd be grateful for any specific suggestions for documents that can be readily obtained. A few students are writing papers about the subject, but the entire class (30) will soon have a group discussion about polgamy in Mormon history and so I need three or four good documents that I can share with all of them. In short, what are the most illuminating primary source materials on this subject? [From the editor: some selections from Mulder and Mortensen's Among the Mormons work well, especially Sarah Wood Kane's account of "Mormon Households," John Coyner's "Crusade and Countercrusade," Grace Atkin Woodbury's account of "The Cohabs Go Underground," and Wilford Woodruff's "Manifesto." You could also use selections from Annie Clark Tanner's Mormon Mother. There's also published Mormon women's diaries: Smart, ed., Mormon Midwife: The 1846-1888 Diaries of Patty Bartlett Sessions; Hatch and Compton, eds., A Widow's Tale: The 1884-1896 Diary of Helen Mar Kimball Whitney. I also like to give students (or have them search for) representative newspaper articles in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune from the 1870s-1880s; digitized and searchable online at http://digitalnewspapers.org/. And especially the Woman's Exponent, an independent Mormon women's newspaper, searchable at http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=%2FWomansExp; and the short-lived rival, the Anti-Polygamy Standard - not, I'm afraid, readily obtained. - Jeff] -- Mark Harvey Professor of History Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies NDSU Dept. 2340, P.
