She is currently working on a paper on lagoon management on the pre-colonial West African Slave Coast, specifically the area that extends from the River Volta (in modern Ghana) to the Lagos channel (in modern Nigeria). The coastline in this region is characterised by a series of lagoons which lies parallel to the sea and which are formed due to both sea and climatic conditions in this particular area. Depending on the season and tide, these lagoons vary between fresh water and salt water systems, which in turn greatly affected the communities who resided in these areas and who exploited the lagoon resources. Her central argument is that the sea and the lagoons in this area should not be regarded as separate entities but much rather forms part of a single water system characterised by the dynamic interaction between the sea and the lagoons. Seen from this view, local lagoon communities not only adapted to this changing environment but also actively managed it to their benefit. What I would like to ask, is if list members of H-Environment could perhaps recommend reading on similar types of lagoon systems elsewhere in the world? In particular she is looking for material on how local communities have managed and altered these lagoon systems over the long term and, if possible, material that comments on the environmental impact of this type of local utilisation of lagoon resources. You can reply either off list to me or to Silke personally at strickrodt@ghil.ac.uk <mailto:strickrodt@ghil.ac.uk> , or via the list.
