American Civil War - turned the United States into a unified nation. First World War - The beginning of the end of multinational empires. (Of course the peace treaty made such a hash of the process of defining national boundaries that we will continue to be fighting wars, of which the Balkan Wars of the 1990's was the opening chapter, to resolve those issue for the next century or so.) Second World War - Destroyed the myth of racial superiority, not only of the Nazi kind, but also of the American Jim Crow kind and the British colonial kind. Global War on Terrorism - War for the soul of Islam. Without explanations, justifications, illuminations, caveats, or arguments, list the things that war has done through the ages. A straight bullet list; put down whatever occurs to you. Let's see what we get. I'll start: Kept the Persians out of Greece Put the Normans in England United China, and Russia, and the United States Spread Islam Geoff Megargee ----- For subscription help, go to: http://www.h-net.org/lists/help/ To change your subscription settings, go to http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=h-war -----
