From: Kuehn, John Dr CIV USA TRADOC <email@example.com> Subject: RE: QUERY: LCVP's vs LVP's at Guadalcanal (UNCLASSIFIED) Date: March 16, 2010 1:28:18 PM EDT To: H-NET Military History Discussion List <H-WAR@H-NET.MSU.EDU> LVT's were at Guadalcanal and this was, I think, their first operational use in combat. These were from those delivered the summer (1941) before in the initial batch to the Marine Corps and were LVT-1's...the unarmored ones with retrofitted machine guns jury rigged to their bows. Their use was primarily logistic at this stage of the game. The landings at both Guadalcanal and for the seizure of Tulagi (initially the primary objective) were from Higgins boats, including the early ones with no bows. Best, John *See _Eyewitness Pacific Theater_ (Sterling 2008) pages 100-101 for some good pictures of all of this. Shameless self promotion, I know. Shameless. John T. Kuehn, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Military History U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth, KS "...by the end of [the war in the Pacific] no major category of warship except minecraft was employed in the U.S. Navy tactically for the purpose for which it had been built." ( I mostly associate the landings with LVP's.)
