However, many amateur photographer soldiers did carry personal cameras, and covertly took photos in combat areas. One was Strachan's, The First World War. Believe Strachan was a photographer as well as historian. Another is Gilbert Martin's WW I book. I don't have the books available right now but will provide next month, detailed references. Possibly the source for the photos is included in the book references, per usual practices.
