MICHAEL, Dr. Robert Age 73 yrs., of Murfreesboro, TN died February 25, 2010. Beloved husband of Susan Ashley Michael and loving father of his four children Stephanie J. Michael and Carolyn R. Michael of Dartmouth, MA, Andrew J. Michael of Providence, RI, and Caitlin Wright of Murfreesboro TN. He is also survived by his three grandchildren and his brother Stephen H. Friedberg of Bloomington, IL. Born in Malden, MA in 1936, Robert Michael was a Professor Emeritus of European History at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he taught the Holocaust for nearly thirty years. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Boston University in Philosophy, Dr. Michael published poetry and more than 50 articles and eleven books on the Holocaust and the History of Antisemitism. He was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow in Philosophy at Columbia University, and an NDEA Fellow. He served in the U.S. Army at the Pentagon and in Bitburg, Germany, 4th Missile Battalion, 6th Artillery Regiment, 7th Army. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he was an editor in New York City. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in European History at the University of Connecticut. Professor Michael, one of the 1997 recipients of the American Historical Association's James Harvey Robinson Prize for the "most outstanding contribution to the teaching and learning of history," also taught at Central European University in Budapest, Inter-American University in Puerto Rico, and lectured at the University of Vienna, the Ateneo Veneto and University of Venice, University of South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University, Ringling College of Art and Design, Florida State University, and Middle Tennessee State University. He was a founder and co-editor of the scholarly email list H-ANTISEMITISM and formerly editor of H-HOLOCAUST and H-W-CIV. He offered the world's first distance-education course on the Holocaust in 1994. Dr. Michael founded the Murfreesboro Writers Group and was a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Murfreesboro. He followed the advice of Socrates and Captain McNelly of the Texas Rangers_a brave man keeps on keeping on.
