Soldiers kept their stripes and rockers, but were paid at the grades they held before the change, until promoted. Thus we had sergeants first class with three stripes and two rockers became sergeants first class, E-6, or E-7. The sergeants first class, E-6, retained their ranks on their uniform, but remained E-6's, until promoted---which in the pre-Vietanm era was not likely. In 1985, the rank of commodore was abolished and the rank of Rear Admiral (lower Half) was reinstituted as a one star rank (prior to 1982, it was a two star rank, but those on the lower half of the RAdm's list were paid as O-7's, but wore two stars). My question is what happened to those RAdm (LH) who were promoted to that grade just prior to the institution of the Commodore Rank - did they revert to commodore, or did they keep their RAdm rank and two stars?
