Observant of both the Dutch-Spanish War and the (fifty-year shorter) Thirty Years' War, Grotius knew whereof he wrote (even if he did not live long enough to see the final outcome of both struggles). I have not yet read it, but a quick scan of the table of contents showed that it was a fairly comprehensive treatment. Failures like the Vatican outlawing caltrops, we now call them land mines? And Crossbows, we now call them Rifles/Pistols/Automatic weapons? But also what was allowed to be used on a battlefield, treatment of prisoners, parole and more?
