I am a 5-6 grade technology teacher working with a 7-8 grade History teacher on a project commemorating the 70th anniversary of WWII with monthly student assemblies for short 1.5-3.0 minute video or PowerPoint projections of photos and video related to important WWII events. You can see our presentations at http://wwii-70-years-later.wiki.packer.edu/ Teachers are generally positive, but feel the presentations lack context because they are so short. Besides the website, we are also planning a bulletin board with a daily WWII calendar and have held break time meetings on the day of some presentations for students to ask questions, since they can't do so during the assembly. A lot of students from grades 5-8 are involved in the presentations, which are voluntary. This all leads up to grade 8, where they have an intensive four-week unit on WWII. A teacher with Holocaust education training objects to including presentations on the Holocaust, because she prefers more in depth discussions, not just acknowledging an event. She would prefer we not commemorate Holocaust events as part of our presentations, because we only have time during the assembly to say something happened, not cover it in depth. I'm having trouble separating WWII from the Holocaust. I'm not sure I can remove mentioning the Holocaust from WWII presentations and just focus on battles, social history and politics. Hopefully I can get some learned thought on Holocaust and WWII education, and opinions (constructive ones, please) on whether this is an appropriate series for middle school students. Should we: 1.) continue on, including the Holocaust? 2.) Not commemorate Holocaust events? 3.) Cease WWII presentations altogether? (I will cross-post on H-NET Holocaust as soon as my membership is approved.)
