I have just read Milam's book, which is the prompt for the post that Mr Beard refers to. Milam clearly has Calley and the image of Calley in his sights, and perhaps in a US context this is justified - outside the US, I doubt that *all*, or even most, junior officers were tarred with the same brush in popular and official understanding, but will happily stand correction on that point. I do think that Milam's is a good and very interesting book, and from a very useful perspective. I especially enjoyed, and profited from, the lengthy discussion on sources of commissioning and the training and cultural preparation of junior officers before deployment.
