I don't know of a recent biography of Kimmel. Here are some thoughts that may be useful: 1. Skipper Steely wrote a recent bio of J.O. Richardson, Pearl Harbor Countdown. (See Amazon.com). He also has a second book on Richardson in mss form which focuses more closely on FDR's decision to replace Richardson with Kimmel and King. Skipper's email is wrightpress-suddenlink.net 2. About 1993 and again c. 2005 Ned Beach and one or two of Kimmel's sons and some current naval leaders petitioned to reinstate Kimmel to rank of admiral posthumously because he was not fully to blame for Pearl Harbor and was never court martialed as he requested. IIRC the SecNav approved but congress either declined or failed to act. Try a Google search such as http://pearlharbor911attacks.com/docs/RESOLUTION_66_USNA.pdf and http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c103:H.RES.13.IH: or especially http://www.kimmelfamily.net/Husband.htm The family is now petitioning Obama. 3. My book War Plan Orange, chapter 25, describes completely Kimmel's war plan of July 1941, approved by the CNO and SecNav in September 1941. He planned to lure Yamamoto into a mid-Pacific battle in the first three weeks of a war. His seven squadrons of long range flying boats were not patrolling Oahu despite war warnings because they were grounded in top shape for the battle. This account is not in other books. 4. I may have extracts from his flag biography here. This month I donated my Orange papers to the Naval War College. Hope this helps.
