I would be very pleased if you agree to post this CFP to the H-War list. From: Li.Ma@univ-littoral.fr (Associate Professor, Universit du Littoral CF4te d92Opale, ULCO, France) Dear Colleagues, We would like to inform you of the: International conference "Chinese Workers in the First World War" Venue : Boulogne-sur-mer (France) and Ypres (Belgium). (Presentations and debate will begin in Boulogne-sur-Mer and continue in Ypres. On 30 May there will be a post-conference coach tour of the Chinese ceme teries in Belgium and France). Date : 26-30 May 2010 Organisation: Universit du Littoral CF4te d92Opale, In Flanders Field M useum With the collaboration of KU Leuven, Maison Europenne des SHS Conference language: French, English or Chinese (exceptionally) Web site: http://www.iccwww1.org/Conference-2010[1] Because of the drain on manpower arising from conscription and war casualtie s, between 1916 and 1919 the French and British Governments employed 140,000 Chinese volunteer workers (40,000 by the French and around 100,000 by the B ritish, known as the Chinese Labour Corps or CLC). The majority of these Chi nese workers found themselves grouped near the frontline to carry out constr uction and maintenance work in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and in the Somme, wher e they also participated in the post-war reconstruction effort. There were n umerous camps of Chinese workers on the CF4te d92Opale and in the surround ing region and the cemeteries in which their dead were buried still exist. The four towns of ULCO, Dunkirk, Boulogne, Calais and Saint-Omer, all hosted Chinese workers92 camps. The hazards of war and sickness which claimed the lives of over 2,000 of the camps92 inhabitants endures, and their sacrific e is commemorated in local cemeteries, principally at Saint-Etienne au Mont, Ruminghem and Noyelles. From November 1918 until the end of 1919, the Chine se Labour Corps also played a pivotally important role in restoring battle-r avaged areas of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Flanders, including the prelimina ry reconstruction of Ypres, the very symbol of European post-war reconstruct ion. In the heart of an area associated with these historic events, this conferen ce will provide an opportunity to carry out a synthesis of research relating to Chinese workers in the First World War. The central axes of the conferen ce will be grouped around the theme of Chinese workers in France and Europe during the Great War. The conference is intended to provide an opportunity t o synthesise research about both Chinese workers under French command and th e CLC. Contributions inviting debate about original theoretical perspectives will be particularly welcomed, as will submissions extending beyond the con fines of historical studies to acknowledge other academic specialisms, inclu ding: sinology, inter-cultural studies and political science. Thematically, the conference will address relevant aspects of the history of the Great War ; living and working conditions of the Chinese workers; international relati ons; education; intercultural com munication and sociology. The conference will give priority to the following topics, although the list is not exhaustive: 95 Living and working conditions of the Chinese workers during the war. 95 The foreign and international relations policy of China: China and the W est; bilateral relationships with France, Britain or Belgium. 95 Education, in particular approaches to adult education (the education of Chinese workers by the YMCA and Chinese students living in France85). 95 Intercultural exchanges between Europe and China linked to the presence of the Chinese workers. 95 Chinese migration to France and the First World War. 95 Chinese workers in the Great War and contemporary ailments and diseases. 95 Connections between Chinese workers in the First World War, subsequent r evolutionary activity and establishment of 91New Communist China92. 95 Germans in China before and during the war; diplomacy and German propaga nda. 95 Material culture of the Chinese workers, including art and artifacts ( 93trench art94). 95 Graves of Chinese workers in the West; identification, recording and rec ognition of Chinese casualties. 95 Oral testimony of the war and Chinese records. We particularly encourage contributions which bring to bear an original poin t of view on the subject. Contributions relating to existing research on the subject (evaluations, critiques, comparisons, development of themes, new so urces, etc.) will also be particularly welcome. The abstract should not exceed 200 words, and be accompanied by a short CV ( Institution, Position, Adress, Nationality, Education, Research Interests, S elected publications, 1 page maxi, format *.rtf ou *doc, Times NewA0 Roman 11) both to be sent in before 30 October 2009. We look forward to receiving your proposal and hope you will be able to join us in May 2010. ----- For subscription help, go to: http://www.h-net.org/lists/help/ To change your subscription settings, go to http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=h-war -----
