To: <Scott Hendrix <hendsn1@GMAIL.COM> Subject: New blog - Australians in Flanders 1917 Dear H-War members, I wish to announce a new online resource commemorating Australians who served in France and Flanders during 1917. This blog has been created to introduce and inform people of the Australian War Memorial's forthcoming exhibition To Flanders Fields, 1917 which will open in August 2007. This exhibition will mark the 90th anniversary of this terrible and most costly year of war for the Australians as they campaigned through northern France to Flanders, culminating in the Battle of Passchendaele (Third Ypres). The exhibition will depict the service, courage and sacrifice of Australians during this ordeal, and how we commemorate them to this day. The URL to the exhibition blog is http://blog.awm.gov.au/1917/ In particular, the blog seeks to, 1) Support the exhibition and stimulate interest in it during the lead up to opening, and to provide a sample of what will appear in the exhibition. 2) Relate some of the exhibition team’s experiences in putting together the exhibition. 3) Provide an online exhibition of sorts for the benefit of those unable to attend the exhibition in Canberra. 4) Provide additional content to support the exhibition for those who want to know more, and for material we couldn’t fit into the physical exhibition. Via the blog we also welcome comments and feedback from interested members of the public or those in the museum, history (or related) professions. Comments received will be moderated and some (not all) may be posted on the blog. Unfortunately we have neither the time nor the resources to enter into lengthy correspondence, or to manage complicated arguments about historical interpretations of events. More and more content will be added progressively during the lead up to, and during the exhibition (Aug-Nov 2007), so if you’re interested, keep visiting the blog regularly and check out what’s new. I hope you enjoy exploring this resource online and that some of you might also be able to visit the exhibition in Canberra.
