Michael: George Mason University Special Collections and Archives holds multiple collections on both New Towns (1960s) and New Communities (1960s-1980s). The difference is that New Communities were partially funded by the U.S. government while New Towns were privately built. I recently used material from the Jack Underhill papers http://sca.gmu.edu/finding_aids/underhill.html for a paper on the New Community Maumelle, Arkansas (although it was often referred to as a New Town). I did not find much critical analysis through secondary literature on New Towns/New Communities in general (or anything written recently), although there are some government reports released in the early 1980s about the New Communities Program, such as this one that I found useful for analysis: United States. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. Office of Policy Development and Research. Division of Policy Studies. _An Evaluation of the federal new communities program_ Washington, D.C. : U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, Assistant Secretary for Policy Development and Research, Office of Policy Development, 1985. ( http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/11375720 ) Apparently, there is just not much recent literature on New Towns and New Communities. Full disclosure: I work at the GMU Special Collections.
