Until 1980, many one family homes around Harvard University (in neighborhoods quite chic now) were divided into one room apartments for graduate (often international) students. This was, I recall, neither legal nor illegal but extra legal and unobjectionable. The owner usually lived downstairs. I wonder if these academic rooming houses were common in other university towns and cities? The 1967 movie _The Graduate_ shows one example in Berkeley. Peter Holloran Worcester State College
