Conference: 'The History of Social Investigation: A Reconsideration' On 14-15 January 2005 the Charles Booth Centre for the Study of Social History will host a conference entitled 'The History of Social Investigation: A Reconsideration'. Speakers will include Prof. George Behlmer (University of Washington, Seattle), Prof. Jose Harris (St. Catherine's College, Oxford), Prof. Martin Hewitt (Trinity and All Saints, Leeds) and Dr Lawrence Goldman (St. Peter's College, Oxford). The conference, to be held at the Open University's Milton Keynes campus, will explore and re-conceptualise the field of 'social investigation', concentrating on the period 1800-1914. Much early social investigation was focussed on urban areas, and conference themes include; 'The Origins of Scientific Social Work', 'Methods of Social Investigation', 'Social Investigation and Work', 'Charles Booth and Positivism', 'Class, Gender and Social Investigation' and 'Identity and Social Investigation'.
