CALL FOR PAPERS The American Village in a Global Setting: An Interdisciplinary Conference The inaugural meeting of a continuing series entitled An American Century: 1901-2000 In honor of Sinclair Lewis and Ida K. Compton April 21-23, 2005 St. Cloud State University St. Cloud, Minnesota The Interdisciplinary Conference in Honor of Sinclair Lewis and Ida L. Compton at St. Cloud State University invites scholars, writers and advanced graduate students to submit papers on topics related to Sinclair Lewis or the American Village in a Global context. "The American Village in a Global Setting" offers many possible sub-themes for writers: * Strangers in the village: immigrant writers and new communities in America * The changing shape of community: city, town and village in literature, film, and media * Globalism and its challenges to community: moral and ethical dimensions of the new world community * Perspectives on the Midwest in literature, art or film * The local wit: community and comedy in the 20th Century * A sense of place and its literary and artistic expression in the 20th Century: geographic, cultural, sexual, spiritual, linguistic, ecological, virtual, political * First American villages: indigenous cultures in the 20th century * The human village and the natural world: challenges to the environment * The urban village: diverse communities in city, town, and country We are particularly interested in papers that promote liberal arts and multi-disciplinary education. This is an interdisciplinary conference that may include works from the following fields: American History, American Literature, American Studies, Art History, Ethnic Studies, Film Studies, GLBT Studies, Music History, Women's Studies. Papers judged to be of particular significance will be eligible for a stipend. All papers presented will be published in a volume of conference proceedings. Paper presentations will be in lecture sessions of 20 minutes.
