"Dixie Emporium - Consumerism, Tourism, & Memory in the American South" The Watson-Brown Foundation is sponsoring a symposium on the American South at historic Hickory Hill in Thomson, Georgia. The interdisciplinary symposium provides an opportunity for scholars to present their research with the aim of compiling a collection of essays for publication. The theme is Dixie Emporium: Consumerism, Tourism, and Memory in the American South. We are seeking papers that explore the various ways Southern cultures and places are experienced, memorialized, marketed, and/or mass- produced. Paper proposals can address, but are not limited to, such topics as souvenirs, brand names, postcard art, foodways, architecture, guidebooks, fairs, amusement parks, preservation projects, and film. The symposium will be held October 7-9, 2005. The Watson-Brown Foundation will fund travel and lodging expenses. Please send a one-page abstract and a brief c.v. by January 20, 2005.
