Call for Papers: "Social Movements and the Cultural Politics of Land Use" American Studies Association November 3-6, 2005 Washington, D.C. Drawing upon the 2005 ASA program's theme "Groundwork: Space and Place in American Cultures", this panel will broadly investigate how land use politics are infused by questions of culture, historical memory, and the construction of collective identities. I am particularly interested in papers that explore historical or contemporary social movements that draw upon notions of culture, authenticity, belonging, or historical interpretation to contest the shape and politics of land use, and specifically those that address questions of racial, gendered, class, or sexual inequality and identity formation. Social movements are broadly interpreted here to include the study of organized groups and associations as well as more informal networks of people. Possible topics may include but are not limited to studies of gentrifying neighborhoods, homeowner associations, new urbanist communities, land reclamation projects, environmental movements, urban transportation (in)equity, etc. My own paper deals with the manipulation of western frontier mythologies by residents of an urban horse keeping community to preserve favorable land use policies that effectively reproduce racial and class privilege. Please send by December 15: a one-page abstract (including any audio/visual needs) and a one-page CV to Laura Barraclough, Program in American Studies and Ethnicity, University of Southern California, at barraclo@usc.edu Laura Barraclough Program in American Studies and Ethnicity University of Southern California
