The ISMARMED org. committee invites you to attend and participate with a paper in the ISMARED, which is an international event that will be held in March 2005 in the beautiful city of Alexandria at the International Library of Alexandria. I am currently representing the IRD (Institute of Research for Development, France), which is in collaboration with the UNESCO and Cairo University in organizing the conference. The conference is a gathering of experts from the Mediterranean Region as well as the whole Middle East and Europe. They are discussing different approaches to effective urban and municipal management to enhance and revitalize city centers. Also there is a special focus on 19th and 20th century architectural and urban heritage. Please find below and attached the last call for papers. The deadline for the abstracts is 20th of October. International Seminar on The Management of The Shared Mediterranean Heritage 5th conference on the Modern Heritage 29-31 March 2005 Call for Papers The conservation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries buildings and sites is continuing to gain importance since the last decade in south Mediterranean countries and other developing areas. Many efforts have been undertaken and the issue is now on the agenda of the international organizations. New trends challenge the traditional concept of the cultural heritage and break a new ground in the field of heritage management. The Seminar addresses a series of topical issues which confront researchers, strategic planners and architects, practicing professionals, national and international policymakers from the two sides of the Mediterranean basin, the aim being : - To present, debate, disseminate and exchange experiences about the management of the nineteenth and early twenties centuries heritage 'in the making'; - To concretize the concept of a shared Mediterranean heritage related to a common civilization and shared history; - To develop a strategic vision for the future, enhance international awareness and foster global networking. - To promote the potentialities of the sites and buildings of this heritage and its role in the endorsement of urban tourism. Themes: The following five themes provide participants and delegates with a forum to explore new opportunities. 1. The concept of the Shared Mediterranean urban and architectural heritage 2. Conservation of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries heritage: Policies, actors, and management 3. New technologies and techniques. 4. Information technology in documenting heritage. 5. Urban heritage and sustainable development. The seminar is supported by the European Union within the framework of the 6th PCRD. This is also the fifth in a series of regional conferences on the Modern Heritage launched by the UNESCO since 2001. It is organized together by the French Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) acting as main coordinator, Cairo University (Center of Architectural and Engineering Design Support), the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The event will take place in the beautiful Mediterranean city of Alexandria and will be hosted in its prestigious Bibliotheca. The program will combine strategic keynote presentations, action-based workshops, paper sessions, exhibitions and social activities.
