Posted by John Logan <j.logan@albany.edu> The Lewis Mumford Center (http://www.albany.edu/mumford/census) provides information on trends in segregation in U.S. metropolitan regions, cities, and suburbs. Our webpage has recently been updated in the following ways: 1. 1980 data have been added to the site, offering a 20-year view of how racial and ethnic composition and residential segregation of metro areas have evolved, using a constant 2000 definition of their boundaries. Data for 1980, 1990, and 2000 are now based on full-count data. This change corrects values for some metro areas with small minority populations, for which our 1990 values based on sample data (STF3A) overestimated the level of segregation. Scholars who downloaded these data from the webpage prior to October 26 should retrieve the corrected files, which will be available by the end of the coming week. 2. Estimates of the size of specific Hispanic national-origin groups have been added. The Census Bureau's 2000 count understates these numbers, particularly for Mexicans, Dominicans, and several Central and South American groups. We provide corrected figures in which many "other Hispanics" have been allocated among these categories. Data are available for states and for individual metro areas for 1990 and 2000. 3. Our report on trends in segregation of children has been withdrawn and is being revised. We have found errors in data manipulation for the children's files that resulted in understatement of their 1990 segregation in metro areas with high minority proportions. We are currently recalculating these values with full-count data; new values will be posted soon. Scholars interested in using these data should watch our "updates and technical notes page" for announcement of this correction. ********************************* John R.
