The following book,

Cole, Jr., Olen. The African American Experience in the Civilian
Conservation Corps. Gainesville, FL: University Press of Florida, 1999.

does not contain any reference to irises in the camps.  The book does
list a lot of primary resources used by the author in writing the
book, many of which are accounts by men who were in the camps. Might
be worth a look.
