Owing to the recent interest in Leo Lowenthal and Norbert Guterman's
_Prophets of Deceit_ (1949) I posted on my blog an excerpt from my
book on
the Melville Revival on my website, showing some of the techniques
advocated
by Gordon Allport and Henry A. Murray as detailed in worksheets
written in
1941 and housed at the Harvard University Archives, where I found them
in
1995. The worksheets were regarded as central to organizing
progressives on
behalf of "civilian morale."
For all those interested in wartime propaganda (directives planned
to
extend beyond the war to prevent a recrudescence of fascism, this time
in
America) this book excerpt will be of interest. I also included some
materials found in the Ralph Bunche Papers at UCLA. This excerpt from
the
Office of War Information promised massive changes in the world
economy and
in the American curriculum after the war. My blog address is
www.clarespark.com. I would appreciate hearing from list members
researching
in this sub-field, for although I found the materials shocking and new,
others may not have done.
