H-US-Japan From: Tracy Timmons-Gray <japanforum@lists.nbr.org> Xpost from: "Japan-U.S. Discussion Forum" <japanforum@lists.nbr.org> Date: Wed, 12 Aug 2009 13:23:00 -0700 Subject: NBR'S JAPAN FORUM (POL) Japan-U.S. Security Relations: A Testing Time for the Alliance ---- Forum members may be interested in the latest issue of "Issues and Insights" from CSiS Pacific Forum. This issue contains a summary, presentations, and papers from the March 2009 conference "Japan-U.S. Security Relations: A Testing Time for the Alliance". - Tracy TG Link to conference report (English): http://csis.org/files/publication/issuesinsights_v09n14.pdf Link to conference report (Japanese): http://csis.org/files/publication/issuesinsights_v09n14_japanese.pdf Report Overview: "Japan-U.S. Security Relations: A Testing Time for the Alliance" (Issues and Insights, vol. 9, no.14, August 6, 2009) By Brad Glosserman, Contributors include: Richard Armitage, Michael Armacost, Masashi Nishihara, Sheila Smith, Fumiaki Kubo, Yukio Okamoto, Joseph S. Nye The 15th annual Japan-U.S. Security Seminar convened amidst a ringing of alarm bells. A global economic crisis challenged the capability of states to sustain growth and prosperity and the philosophy that has dominated the postwar economic order. The prospect of a North Korean "satellite test" threatened regional stability and raised questions about the ability of global institutions, the United Nations in particular, to check misbehavior. The possibility of the first non-Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) government taking power in Tokyo by means of the ballot box raised questions about Japan's future outlook and orientation. All of this provides the backdrop for the 50th anniversary of the Japan-U.S. alliance, which will occur next year. The report includes: "Key Findings from the 15th Japan-U.S. Security Seminar" "Conference Summary" by Brad Glosserman, Rapporteur "Asia: Where are we? Where are we going?" by Richard Armitage "Survey of the Security Environment in Asia" by Michael Armacost "Strategic Priorities at 50" by Masashi Nishihara "Regime Change in Tokyo" by Sheila Smith "U.S.-Japan Relations under Obama" By Fumiaki Kubo "A Last Chance for Japan" by Yukio Okamoto "A Glass Half Full" by Joseph S. Nye, Jr. Link to conference report (English): http://csis.org/files/publication/issuesinsights_v09n14.pdf Link to conference report (Japanese): http://csis.org/files/publication/issuesinsights_v09n14_japanese.pdf --- The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is a nonprofit research institution, and financial support from Forum members like you helps maintain the Japan-U.S. Discussion Forum.
