Dear colleagues, I would like to draw your attention to a two-day international workshop I am organizing on the assassination attempt on Abdülhamid II (1905). Event : The Assassination Attempt on Abdülhamid II (1905): Rethinking Ottoman-European Entanglements Date : June 20-21, 2013 Venue : University of Antwerp (Belgium) Abstract : Though both Ottomanists and Europeanists interested in European-Ottoman relations have become aware of the intricate connectedness of European and Ottoman histories, they still hardly ever meet and discuss their complementary insights. Yet, more and more scholarship has demonstrated the utility of new perspectives that 'provincialize' Europe and 'departicularize' the Ottoman Empire. This workshop therefore takes one significant historical 'moment' - the 1905 failed assassination attempt on sultan Abdülhamid, in which a Belgian anarchist was involved - as a stepping stone to address broader issues of interest to historians of the nineteenth century, such as international law, terrorism, Orientalism, diplomacy, anarchism, public opinion, Ottoman modernity, empire and nationalism. By this means it aims to offer a forum for fruitful discussion encompassing both European and Ottoman history, and to prompt historians to rethink the nineteenth century from trans- and international perspectives.
