I am pleased to announce the publication of Other Places: _Ottomans traveling, seeing, writing, drawing the world. Essays in honor of Thomas D. Goodrich_, Part II in _Osmanlı Araştırmaları / Journal of Ottoman Studies_ 40 (2012), guest-edited by Baki Tezcan and Gottfried Hagen Thomas Goodrich has done pioneering work in the study and the documentation of Ottoman cartography. His long series of studies dedicated to Ottoman representations of the world and of the New World in particular, culminating in his monograph, _The Ottoman Turks and the New World: A Study of Tarih-i Hind-i Garbi and Sixteenth- Century Ottoman Americana_ (1990), was a milestone in the study of Ottoman culture in the US. The experience and representation of Others, its relation to imperial ideologies, the theoretical and practical aspects of travel, seafaring, and exploration, visual representation and mapping, the circulation of knowledge in manuscript and print, all these are topics that are on the agenda of Ottoman studies today. Thomas D. Goodrich’s work has been at the forefront of many of these exciting trajectories of research. I was a foreign doctoral student when I first wrote to him with a timid inquiry about an aspect of Tarih-i Hind-i Garbî almost twenty years ago, and received ample advice, material, and encouragement. Since then, I continue to enjoy and admire Tom’s enthusiasm for our common cause, the study of Ottoman history and culture, and his generosity in sharing knowledge and material, that have helped so many in our field, and can be a model for all of us. The second part includes contributions by Baki Tezcan, E. Natalie Rothman, Emine Fetvacı, Zeynep Aydoğan, Jean-Louis Bacqué-Grammont, Sonja Brentjes, Palmira Brummett & Thompson Newell, John J. Curry, John-Paul A. Ghobrial, Gottfried Hagen, Bruce McGowan, Svatopluk Soucek, Meltem Toksöz, Nicolas Vatin, Alexis Wick, and Bilgin Aydın.
