With apologies for self-promotion, cross-posting, etc., I humbly submit the following event for those who might be in the area and interested in coming by. John Curry UNLV Department of History ----------------------------- THE AMERICAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN TURKEY cordially invites you to attend a lecture by Prof. John Curry History Department, University of Nevada, Las Vegas “Sufi Books and Ottoman Microhistory: A Case Study of the Hazret-i Nasûhî Dergahı Library in Üsküdar” The digitization of hundreds of thousands of Ottoman books and texts in Istanbul’s manuscript libraries has revolutionized the study of pre-modern Islamic history, and opened up opportunities that were not accessible to researchers even a decade ago. By focusing intensively on a collection of roughly 300 books that have been preserved in the library of the Nasûhî branch of the Halveti Sufi order, this presentation will explore the possibilities for developing micro-historical studies of Ottoman Sufism. Traditionally neglected by scholars outside of the order’s adherents, the collection in fact reveals a great deal of information about the intellectual pursuits, family members, and training of Sufi leaders across the generations.
