Dear H-TURK subscribers, A colleague working on the history of climatology and seismology in fin-de-siecle central Europe has asked me about the Ottoman case. Can anyone direct me to primary sources or secondary work on state-sponsored scientific research in the Hamidian and/or Young Turk periods (including independent research conducted by Europeans in Ottoman territory) that focused on climate, geology, or earthquakes? Was there a government bureau for this kind of research, for instance, and are there any articles written on it? Many thanks, Christine Philliou Columbia University
