Sent: 12 July 2009 01:55 Subject: News Literacy Course for Undergraduates News Literacy Course for Undergraduates The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has a continuing interest in News Literacy. Last year the Knight Foundation awarded a grant to the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement at Colby College to develop a program in news literacy for undergraduates. We began our program last year and last week launched a website that outlines the program we have designed, www.colby.edu/lovejoy<http://www.colby.edu/lovejoy> . I would like to call your attention to two particular links on that site. In the lower right hand corner, we provide a link to a syllabus to an extremely successful course on New Literacy that we offered last January (during our January term, but it certainly is adaptable to a semester course) and intend to continue in the future. Any colleagues who might be interested in developing such a course or drawing on the material in the course offered at Colby should contact Sandy Maisel (lsmaisel@colby.edu . We will be happy to provide access to all of our materials. Second, at the top right, is our new News Literacy Blog. The postings in this blog should be valuable to faculty teaching courses in American, comparative, or international politics as well as those concerned with the medoa. If you [r any colleagues might be interested in joining this conversation (which we intend to expand beyond journalists), you would be most welcomed. As noted on the blog, please contact Susanna Thompson (smthomps@colby.edu ), the Assistant Director of the Center, to join the blog. We would welcome any feedback on this program.
