Perhaps artists who have prodigious reputations in Art other than stained glass are held in high esteem, sought after by clients, given a free hand and do not suffer from the constraints put upon the average artist/ crafts person. It is not always a level playing field. Your list of distinguished artists is clearly impressive, one cannot quarrel with their success or ability, but this is not always the case, I remember a Principal of an Art College, a wonderful landscape water colourist, who was often requested to design stained glass windows for local churches on the pre-supposition he was an expert. He really wasn't much good at anything where imagination was required, he could make a great drawing or painting if there was a life figure or scene in front of him to copy, but for stained glass his design and drawing was weak, not a clue, however, on each occasion he was rescued by the help of SG craftsmen whose contribution went un-noticed, although the Art College Principal increased his reputation with every project. --
