Dear Soyuz graduate students, Our first business meeting is fast approaching and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am the student representative for Soyuz and my main objective in taking this office has been to help keep afloat and nourish Soyuz tradition of emphasizing the contribution of young scholars to the group development. As many Soyuz members had said at the last Soyuz conference at Yale, attending Soyuz meetings and communicating with other members of the group across the country and abroad has been a valuable and formative experience for developing their research interests and sometimes carriers. In short, to help keep Soyuz a friendly yet academically thorough place for probing our ideas as young and aspiring students of postsocialism, I would like to ask you to write to me with any specific concerns/questions/suggestions that you might have. One possible idea I have in mind for our future meetings, for example, is to organize a workshop where scholars might share their professional experience with grad students. This might include workshops on writing grants/cover letters with a specific emphasis on postsocialism; talking to interdisciplinary publics; or, on the contrary, presenting interdisciplinary ideas to anthropologists. Please let me know what you think about this idea. Would it be useful to you? I welcome your ideas and would appreciate your comments. I am in the field this year (in snowing Yekaterinburg, Russia) and therefore will not be able to attend the meetings. I am available via email throughout the year, however. I also asked Joe Crescente (Soyuz programming coordinator) and he kindly agreed to represent me both at the AAASS and AAA meetings this year. Please speak with Joe during the Soyuz business meetings about your questions/concerns/suggestions etc and he will pass this information on to me. Many thanks and enjoy the upcoming conference in Boston (those of you attending it) Best, Inna Inna Leykin PhD Candidate Department of Anthropology Campus Box 1921 Brown University Providence, RI 02912 Inna_Leykin@brown.edu
