Dear H-Southern-Lit subscribers H-Southern-Lit is seeking two new list editors to replace Martyn Bone and Melanie Benson, as well as a new book reviews editor to replace Lisa Hinrichsen. As you all know, H-Southern-Lit is a discussion network, run by H-Net and sponsored by the Society for the Study of Southern Literature (SSSL), that provides a forum for the discussion of issues relating to research and teaching in the field of U.S. southern literary studies. Since its inception in June 2007, H-Southern-Lit has also encouraged cross- and interdisciplinary links to scholars in related fields, as well as related H-Net links (H-South, H-Amstdy, H-Afro-Am, H-Southern Music, etc.). Since June 2007, H-Southern-Lit has been operated by a team of volunteers: Martyn Bone (University of Copenhagen) and Melanie Benson (Dartmouth College) were the inaugural list editors, while Lisa Hinrichsen (University of Arkansas) was the inaugural book reviews editor (she was recently joined by Grant Bain, also of the University of Arkansas). Having completed more than the regular two-year term as editors, Martyn, Melanie and Lisa have decided to resign and hand over the reigns to others. They hope that other H-Southern-Lit subscribers/SSSL members will be interested in taking on the task of maintaining--and hopefully strengthening--H-Southern-Lit. The official description of H-Net editorial duties is as follows: List editors manage, edit, and support listserv discussion lists. They moderate discussions, edit posts, solicit and commission contributions, manage subscriptions, work with H-Net to develop and implement editing policies and practices, and directly post messages to the subscribers of their lists. List editors must have strong field qualifications for the subject covered by the list; be able to send, receive, and edit electronic mail on a reliable and regular basis; be able to manage listserv, the mail distribution software that H-Net uses. H-Net provides basic training in the use of listserv and provides limited support for a range of mail programs used in list editing. Here is information specific to H-Southern-Lit: In general, editing duties require email access, reading through proposed postings, contact with the posters, contact with the H-Net Managing Editor, and contact with other members of the H-Net leadership. Responsibilities include daily reviewing of proposed postings; editing of the postings for format; some contact with poster for the verification of information; sending postings to central clearance center; approving postings when they clear; and managing subscriptions. (H-Southern-Lit currently has around 250 subscribers.) When on duty, editorial tasks require about 10-20 minutes each day, depending on traffic. When off duty, editors have little to no responsibilities other than being available via email for any administrative concerns that might arise. List Editors are selected for two-year terms (as mentioned above, Martyn and Melanie have both run the list for more than two years, which is one reason why they have decided to resign). While other H-Net lists have operated with a regular, scheduled rotation of list editors, Martyn and Melanie have generally taken turns to run H-Southern-Lit as and when they have been available. In the future, H-Southern-Lit editors may choose to rotate duties on a more formally scheduled basis. If you are interested in becoming a List Editor, please email Martyn at bone@hum.ku.dk by Friday 20 November 2009; if you are interested in becoming Book Reviews Editor, email both Martyn _and_ Lisa (lhinrich@uark.edu). Please include a short CV; your reasons for why you'd like to become an H-Southern-Lit editor; and information about your current availability and plans for the next three years (i.e., let us know if you anticipate any significant changes that may disrupt your ability to serve as editor: job change, moving, etc.). In the subject line, please put "H-Southern-Lit editing." We look forward to hearing from you.
