From: Matt Spooner <mpspooner@gmail.com> [Ed. note (PBK): I have CC-d this request to our sister lists, H-SLAVERY and H-AFRO-AM.] I am trying to put together a now somewhat last-minute panel for the 2010 SHEAR conference in Rochester, NY. Over the past decade, and especially in the past few years, there has been substantial renewed interest in the African colonization movement. This panel would be focused on bringing together some of the more recent trends in writing and thinking about colonization in the attempt to share new ways of conceptualizing and understanding the impact of colonization on innumerable subjects of long interest to American historians. Papers for this panel might deal with colonization broadly or locally, with those who resisted or those who promoted its objectives, but they should represent ways of thinking about African colonization that stretches the now tired "pro- or anti-slavery" debate surrounding the American Colonization Society and its auxiliaries. My paper will focus on contextualizing the emergence of the ACS at the particular historical moment in which it was founded, drawing attention to the way its diverse early promoters hoped the scheme would solve a plethora of often distinct social problems. The deadline for submissions is December 1st, so at this late date we would have to move quickly. Please contact me at mpspooner@gmail.com<mps2130@columbia.edu> if interested.
