H-Slavery listmembers may recall a query in late 2005 on behalf of a Master's degree candidate preparing his thesis on "the communicational and political uses of quilts throughout the underground railroad" (a/k/a the "Underground Railroad Quilt Code"). The student was having difficulty finding primary sources on the subject. The archived thread can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/yzbt54 While preparing year-end updates to my website examining the "Code" myth (www.ugrrquilts.hartcottagequilts.com), I located the published thesis, "Points of Contact: Nineteenth Century Visual Rhetoric of the Underground Railroad" (ISBN 978-0-542-67585-0). As the title suggests, the author approaches the "Quilt Code" as historic fact. Among other things, in support of this premise he attributes statements of fact to me which I not only never made but which are the polar opposite of what I have written. Those of you who responded to the advisor's request may wish to review the thesis. It is available here: http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/fullcit/1435634 I discuss portions of it here: http://ugrrquilt.hartcottagequilts.com/rr6a.htm#ransaw Leigh Fellner
