moral construction of politics 2010 SHEAR panel on disestablishment, religious controversy, moral construction of politics I would like to put a panel together for the 2010 SHEAR conference in Rochester. My own paper, tentatively titled "The Ghost of Constantine," explores the employment of figures/events from Jewish and Christian antiquity in appeals for disestablishment. I am interested in how this shows the ways that the call for disestablishment was rooted not merely in the embrace of republicanism or in the triumph of religious liberty in an era of political and social revolution, but in concerns for theological correctness and the prevention of theological error promoted by the state. The precise theme of the panel is flexible. Ideally it would explore ways of complicating or reconceptualizing the religion-politics nexus, but it might also deal with religious/theological controversies more generally or with problems of moral reasoning (religious or otherwise) in the formation of civil society. The deadline is December 1, but I am confident that we can put a submission together quickly. I have already approached a potential chair and a commentator, so this is more an appeal for papers/panelists. Please contact me offlist at <nrives@brandeis.edu> if you’re interested. Thank you all in advance for your consideration! Nathan Rives nrives@brandeis.edu Ph.D. Candidate in American History Brandeis University
