I am hoping to put together a panel for the SHEAR meeting in Rochester in 2010. The general theme would involve the relationship between religion and politics during the War of 1812, or more broadly during the early republic. Depending on the other panelists' papers, we can formulate a more precise theme. The working title of my paper is "'I Shall Speak Concerning a Nation': New England Fast Days During the War of 1812." The paper examines sermons preached on both state and national fast days in order to examine the various ways religious discourse could speak to national politics. The paper also compares fast-day sermons to other public rituals, such as Fourth of July orations, and it looks at listeners' support for and resistance to the ministers' sermons. Though the December 1 deadline is fast approaching, we can still put together a panel. If you have a paper that might fit, or if you would be interested in being the chair or commentator, please contact me off-list (lincoln@lincolnmullen.com).
