First, thanks to everyone for the responses.

John Rock's only teacher about whom we know much is Ishmael Locke,
grandfather of the Alain Locke of Harlem Renaissance fame.

Also, according to the article, Mr. Ward was of African heritage, as the
author notes that Ward is one of the "countrymen" of the "Africans".
