Jessica Lepler Date: Wed, 28 Oct 2009 12:04:12 -0400 From: Erickson, Paul <perickson@mwa.org> Announcing an upcoming academic seminar to be held at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, MA. On Monday, November 9, at 4:30 PM, Jessica Lepler, an assistant professor of history at the University of New Hampshire and a current Hench Post-dissertation Fellow at AAS, will be giving a talk titled: A PICTURE OF PANIC: CONSTRUCTING JACKSONIAN HARD TIMES IN WORDS AND IMAGES Prof. Lepler has provided the following précis of her talk: During the spring of 1837, a dramatic financial crisis launched a period of economic chaos that ended the Jacksonian Era. The archived images of the panic of 1837, however, reflect very little of the experiences of financial uncertainty and economic hardship that are all too familiar in 2009. By exploring the construction of the panic of 1837 in words and images, "A Picture of Panic" illustrates not only the changing meaning of the word panic in the late 1830s, but also an important moment in the historical development of our own pictures of panic. The seminar will take place in the Elmarion Room at the Goddard-Daniels House, located at 190 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA, 01609.
