Date: Fri, 18 Nov 2005 04:04:10 -0800 (PST) From: Richard N Rosenfeld <email@example.com> Jefferson's reference to the "reign of witches" was in a letter to John Taylor that he wrote on Friday, June 1st, 1798. "A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolved, and the people recovering their true sight, restoring their government to its true principles... " It had been an upsetting week for Republicans. During that week, the Alien Bill was having its third reading before the Senate, which Jefferson described the day before to Madison as "a most detestable thing." On Monday of that week, Adams signed into law the new provisional army, which would allow him to invest McPherson's Blues, the federalist militia that was terrorizing Philadlephia's Republicans, with the authority of the federal government. You may find Book I, Chapter II ("Black Cockades") of my work American Aurora (New York, St. Martin's Press, 1997) helpful in providing a day-by-day context for Jefferson's observation.
