They understood political power in America so well that they decided not to wield it? Admirable, perhaps; "pure" by their own definition, to be sure (I've never meant to denigrate either their antislavery commitment or their contributions within the movement). But a shrewd understanding of political power and effectiveness in a participatory republic? It's hard to label secession from the ballot box that. Matt Mason Brigham Young University
