The conference will bring together documentary editors and other historians and scholars to explore Jefferson and other Founders in their retirements. The conference will celebrate the publication of the first volume in the documentary edition of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson: Retirement Series. Papers are invited addressing the central topic with possible emphases including: Jefferson and his circle of acquaintances in his later years; the concern of Jefferson and other Founders with their legacy, and their changing use of language as they aged; Jefferson's perception and use of his role as "Sage of Monticello." The Conference will take place at the Jefferson Library, which is located adjacent to the International Center for Jefferson Studies and a short drive from both Monticello and Charlottesville, Virginia. Out-of-town attendees will be housed near the central grounds of the University of Virginia, the most important legacy of Jefferson's retirement years.
