The fellowship provides support to a postdoctoral investigator to pursue a project in association with a curator in the Division of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). We especially encourage applications from those with an interest in the history of collecting for anthropology museums in general, and in the AMNH’s Asian ethnographic collection in particular. Project Description: The Encyclopedia of Connecticut History Online The Encyclopedia of Connecticut History Online is a “next generation” online state encyclopedia, which integrates digitized archival collections, museum resources, media products and curricula materials in over 1,100 authoritative essays and entries on Connecticut’s past. At its launch in June 2012, ECHO will be the standard reference text on the state’s past. It will be based on a scholarly reassessment of the Connecticut story from top to bottom across the full range of Connecticut’s periods, themes and underlying “people, places and events.” It will revise existing secondary sources to reflect new interpretations in the field, but will also commission substantial new scholarship to address the many aspects of the state’s social, cultural, ethnic, racial and contemporary history long ignored by historians. In the next two years we will add an additional 550 thematic essays, town histories and entries to 523 articles already in hand. We will incorporate an additional 2,855 digitized primary sources in these articles, joining 2,230 digital materials already located in the state’s major archival repositories. We will incorporate 17 theme-based documentaries produced through the CHC’s decade-long Connecticut Experience collaboration with Connecticut Public Television and create at least 50 ECHO-based curriculum units for use in U.S. History courses across the state. We will link each entry and essay to heritage organizations with programs and resources relevant to that subject and will include in each of ECHO’s content pages, access to a constantly updated, statewide heritage calendar of events and exhibits. Subject to the availability of funding, ECHO will be an ongoing project of the Connecticut Humanities Council. Efforts through 2012 to populate and launch the site will be followed in succeeding years with the ongoing revision and refinement of existing entries and the steady addition of new content.
