Easiest way that I know is to teach the plays in historical perspective. For example, "For Colored Girls" could only have been produced after the sexual revolution, the feminist revolution, and the civil rights movement. If you put literature (especially that which was meant to appeal to a wide audience) in its social and historical context, it accomlishes the goal of teaching popular culture and literary analysis.
