Greetings! I am forwarding a request from another listserv with the sender's permission. Please send all responses to Linda Sherwood at linda@LINDASHERWOOD.COM because she is not a member of our list. Please feel free to copy our list so that we can learn from one another. I include what I sent Linda at the close of this email. All best, Dale ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: "Linda Sherwood" linda@LINDASHERWOOD.COM Sent: Monday, March 2, 2009 5:34:27 AM GMT -08:00 US/Canada Pacific Subject: Online Teaching - how do you keep track of students? I'm on the online committee for my college, and I am writing a brief article for the committee's newsletter about how various instructors keep track of online students. I thought I'd ask the list to contribute ideas (or arguments why special tracking isn't necessary). What are your thoughts about the tracking tools available through most CMS? Have you created any special ways (documents) to keep track of students? How does your approach for missing online students differ from missing face-to-face students? If you are willing to share your two cents, you can e-mail me at linda@lindasherwood.com Thanks, Linda Sherwood Visiting Assistant Professor Ferris State University --------------------------------------------- I wrote Linda the following: As for my own tracking, yes, I keep electronic files for each class, not per individual. I have my own"key," which includes terms such as M (morning), D (daytime), (N night), LN (late night) WW (weekend warrior). My weekend warriors are students who work full time, raise families and go to school full time. I do not structure my classes so that all the work and class interactions can be done on the weekend, but my weekend warriors always save what they can for the weekend. Linda, I also use the "course statistics" function of the CMS to revise my curriculum. I can evaluate whether or not I need to collapse or expand the time line for a specific assignment based on how I see the course working through the different parts of an assignment. With all best wishes, Dale
