7. Expedition Copenhagen with Will Steger
Follow along with polar explorer Will Steger as he and a group of young people
embark on Expedition Copenhagen, a mission to bring the youth voice to the
international climate negotiations in December. First give your students the
basic knowledge they need to follow the news coverage of the climate
negotiations and the skills they need to make their opinions heard. Then send
your students' statements to the youth delegates headed to Copenhagen and
follow the Youth Delegation's multimedia blogs. Download Citizen Climate
(linked below), free standards-linked high school lesson plans from the Will
Steger Foundation. These lesson plans build on the WSF's original six lesson
plans on the basics of global warming. The new lessons cover the carbon cycle,
target levels for atmospheric levels of greenhouse gasses, cap and trade,
carbon tax, new technologies, concerns of developed and developing countries,
and how to formulate position statements.

10. Monarchs in Mexico Trips ~ Mexico
February 6-13, 2010 and February 13-20, 2010 ~ Michoacán, Mexico
In the entire world, no butterflies migrate like the monarchs of North America.
Millions of these butterflies fly in masses south to Mexico each Fall. By
instinct alone, they travel to the same mountains, often to the exact same
trees, that their ancestors left the previous spring. Somehow they find a place
in Mexico that they've never seen before. The monarch's unique winter habitat
is found on only 12 mountaintops located at nearly 10,000 feet in the
Transvolcanic Mountains of central Mexico. Join Monarchs Across Georgia (an
initiative of the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia) on an adventure
to visit three overwintering sanctuaries and experience one of the world's most
impressive natural phenomena. Plus learn about local efforts to promote
sustainable and environmentally sound economic activities through visits to a
local school, the Alternare community center, and the La Cruz Habitat
Protection Project's tree nursery. Two separate weeklong trips are offered:
February 6-13, 2010, and February 13-20, 2010. Don't delay - both weeks sold
out in 2009!

12. Conservation Case Studies Needed
Submit by November 18, 2009
Audubon and EETAP are seeking additional examples of projects that have
successfully used education to help solve conservation problems. We will
highlight these case studies in a Conservation Education Toolkit designed to
help conservation practitioners better integrate education as a key
conservation strategy. Ideal case studies identify a specific biodiversity
target; address threats to the target, focus on specific audience(s); focus on
education, communication, outreach, and/or social marketing strategies to reach
that audience; and include an evaluation component. Please click on link below
by November 18, 2009, to submit a short screening questionnaire. We'll follow
up ASAP!

16. New High School Curriculum: Citizen Climate
The Will Steger Foundation developed Citizen Climate, a new high school
curriculum tied to national standards that focuses on global climate solutions.
This curriculum emphasizes civic engagement and helps teachers and students
understand the critical and complex climate solutions being discussed on the
national and international stage. It also allows students to formulate
statements about what they would like to see happen in climate policy and how
these policies and actions can be replicated in their states and local
communities.
