Princeton Preservation Group Meeting Announcement
Date/Time: Wednesday, December 9, 2009, 5-6:30pm
Place: Bunn Library, The Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville
Speakers: Jessica Myers, Local History Librarian, Plainfield Public Library
Gary D. Saretzky, Archivist, Monmouth County Archives
Topic: Nitrate Negatives: Challenges and Opportunities for Preservation
of Local History
Nitrate negatives were used by photographers from the 1880s to the 1950s.
Many have deteriorated due to inherent instability while others have been
deliberately destroyed because they are flammable. Yet some are still in
excellent condition. After an overview by Gary Saretzky concerning the
nature, history, and conservation of nitrate negatives, Jessica Myers will
provide an illustrated talk about how the Plainfield Public Library has
handled its large collection of nitrate negatives by local photographers.
Myers will address archivists' challenges: the steps of selection process;
separating, freezing, thawing, and number assignment. She will then show
slides made from recent prints from 1) roll-film from the end of the 19th
century and early 20th century by amateur Reina Lawrence, and 2) 8x10
sheet film by professional Paul Collier who used nitrate in his view
camera until 1951. Myers will also discuss storage and use of the
Plainfield collection.
Gary Saretzky, who has made many 8x10 contact prints and enlargements of
negatives for the Plainfield Public Library, will conclude the program by
discussing some of the challenges of darkroom printing nitrate negatives
using modern silver gelatin paper.
